Why Overnight Rolls Are a Game Changer for Your Mornings

If you haven’t yet discovered the magic of overnight cinnamon rolls, prepare for your mornings to be transformed. The overnight method is a true culinary revelation, offering unparalleled convenience without sacrificing flavor or quality. Imagine waking up, the scent of freshly baked cinnamon rolls already teasing your senses, knowing that most of the hard work was done the night before. This method means you can enjoy warm, homemade pastries even on the busiest of mornings, making it ideal for entertaining or simply treating yourself.

The beauty of preparing these orange cinnamon rolls overnight isn’t just about saving time in the morning; it also allows the dough to develop richer flavors and a more complex texture. The slow, cold proofing process enhances the yeast’s activity and deepens the sweetness and elasticity of the dough. This results in rolls that are incredibly tender, moist, and bursting with a more profound taste. So, go ahead and embrace the overnight craze – your future self (and your family) will thank you!

Crafting the Perfect Dough: Simple & Delicious

Don’t be intimidated by working with yeast! This recipe for orange cinnamon rolls is surprisingly straightforward, making it perfect for both seasoned bakers and those new to yeast breads. The dough comes together effortlessly in a stand mixer, yielding a soft, pliable texture that’s a joy to work with. The simple ingredients – active dry yeast, warm milk, honey, oil, eggs, salt, and white whole wheat flour – combine to create a foundational dough that’s both wholesome and utterly delicious.

The gentle kneading process ensures elasticity, allowing the rolls to puff up beautifully during their long, slow rise in the refrigerator. This hands-on part of the recipe is quite therapeutic, and soon you’ll have a perfectly smooth dough ready for its overnight transformation. Even if you’re a beginner, following these steps will lead you to a remarkably tender and flavorful dough, proving that homemade cinnamon rolls are well within reach.

The Zesty Heart: Orange Marmalade & Cinnamon Filling

The filling is where these cinnamon rolls truly distinguish themselves. While the classic cinnamon-sugar combination is always a winner, the addition of luscious orange marmalade takes these rolls to an entirely new level. The bright, slightly bitter, and sweet notes of the orange marmalade cut through the richness of the butter and sugar, creating a dynamic flavor profile that’s both comforting and exciting.

Spreading softened butter evenly over the rolled-out dough creates a sticky base for the cinnamon sugar, ensuring every nook and cranny is coated in fragrant spice. Then, a generous layer of orange marmalade is spread over the top, embedding its vibrant fruitiness directly into the swirls. As the rolls bake, the marmalade caramelizes slightly, infusing the dough with its signature citrus zest and creating pockets of gooey, flavorful goodness. It’s a symphony of flavors that will make your kitchen smell absolutely divine.

The Grand Finale: Luscious Cream Cheese Icing

No cinnamon roll is complete without a generous slathering of icing, and this cream cheese version is truly the crowning glory of our orange cinnamon rolls. It’s the perfect balance of sweet and tangy, with a hint of citrus that ties all the flavors together beautifully. The recipe calls for softened cream cheese, powdered xylitol (or powdered sugar), fresh orange juice, vanilla extract, and a touch of milk, creating an incredibly smooth and spreadable consistency.

The secret to its irresistible taste is the fresh orange juice, which echoes the citrus notes in the filling and adds an extra layer of brightness. Beating the ingredients together until creamy ensures a lump-free, velvety icing that melts ever-so-slightly into the warm rolls. Whether you prefer to drizzle it delicately or “dump” it on for maximum decadence, this icing elevates the entire experience, making each bite utterly heavenly. It’s so good, you might find yourself sneaking a taste (or two!) straight from the bowl.

Servings 9 cinnamon rolls

Ingredients

  • DOUGH:
  • 1 pkg active dry yeast 2-1/4 teaspoons
  • 1 cup warm milk 120F
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4-1/2 to 5 cups white whole wheat flour
  • FILLING:
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar (or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup orange marmalade
  • FROSTING:
  • 2 oz softened cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered xylitol or powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  • Prepare the dough: In the bowl of a large stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy, then whisk in honey, oil, beaten eggs, and salt. With mixer running on medium-speed, add 4-1/2 cups flour until dough pulls away from sides (if dough seems too sticky, add 1 tablespoon additional flour at a time until dough is the right consistency).
  • Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently knead until smooth and elastic. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover bowl in plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place 1-1/2 to 2 hours until doubled.
  • Punch dough down and turn onto a floured surface. Roll out into a 15×7 rectangle and spread with softened butter. In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon and gently pat to within 1/2-in of edges over softened butter. Spread marmalade over sugar.
  • Tightly roll up dough along the length side and pinch edges to seal. Cut into 1-in rolls and place swirl side-up in a greased 9×13 baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and let rolls chill in refrigerator overnight.
  • Remove rolls from refrigerator and preheat oven to 375F. Bake rolls 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 10 minutes on a wire cooling rack while you prepare the icing.
  • Place softened cream cheese and sugar in small bowl. With an electric mixer, beat on low speed until creamed. Beat in orange juice, vanilla, and just enough milk to achieve a drizzling consistency.
  • Gently drizzle cream cheese icing over warm rolls and let stand 5 minutes. Enjoy warm!
