Crafting Your Own Cheddar Skillet Dinner Rolls: The Process

Making these glorious dinner rolls is a rewarding journey, culminating in a centerpiece-worthy dish that will impress and delight. While the full, detailed recipe is provided below, let’s walk through the key components and considerations to ensure your baking success.

Essential Ingredients for Fluffy, Flavorful Rolls

Quality ingredients are the foundation of exceptional bread. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need to create these garlic cheddar masterpieces:

  • Cheddar cheese: Opt for a good quality sharp or medium cheddar for the best flavor payoff. Shredding it yourself is often best, but pre-shredded works in a pinch.
  • Fresh garlic: Minced fresh garlic for the butter topping is non-negotiable for that vibrant, pungent aroma and taste.
  • Garlic powder: This provides an underlying savory depth throughout the dough itself, complementing the fresh garlic butter.
  • All-purpose flour: The backbone of our rolls, carefully measured for the perfect dough consistency.
  • Active dry yeast: The magical ingredient that makes our rolls light and airy. We’ll discuss yeast options in more detail.
  • Water: Crucial for activating the yeast and hydrating the dough, ensuring the right temperature is key.
  • Egg: Adds richness to the dough and is used in an egg wash for a beautiful golden crust.
  • Unsalted butter: Essential for both the dough and the fragrant garlic butter topping.
  • Vegetable or canola oil: Helps keep the dough tender and moist.
  • Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances all the flavors in the rolls.
  • Honey: A touch of sweetness not only flavors the dough but also helps activate the yeast and contributes to browning.

Choosing and Working with Yeast

The type of yeast you use can impact your baking process, but rest assured, you can achieve fantastic results with either active dry or instant yeast. We typically recommend using active dry yeast for these dinner rolls because it consistently delivers excellent bread results. Our personal preference for yeast baking is Red Star Yeast, which we’ve found to be incredibly reliable.

When using active dry yeast, you’ll first “bloom” it by dissolving it in warm water with a touch of honey. This step confirms the yeast is active and alive, ensuring your dough will rise beautifully. You’ll know it’s ready when a foamy layer appears on the surface after about 5 minutes.

If you only have instant yeast on hand, don’t worry – you can still make these delicious dinner rolls! Instant yeast is designed to be mixed directly with dry ingredients, eliminating the need for a separate blooming step. Simply mix the instant yeast in with your flour and then proceed with combining the wet and dry ingredients as instructed. The process is slightly different, but the outcome will be equally delightful.

Expert Tips for Achieving Perfect Dinner Rolls Every Time

Baking homemade bread might seem intimidating, but with these simple tips, you’ll be baking like a pro. These guidelines are crucial for ensuring your Garlic Cheddar Skillet Dinner Rolls are soft, fluffy, and full of flavor:

  1. Measure flour accurately: This is perhaps the most critical step in yeast baking. Over-measuring flour can lead to dense, dry rolls. We highly recommend using the spoon-and-level technique: use a spoon to scoop flour into your measuring cup, then level off the top with the back of a knife. Avoid scooping directly with the measuring cup, as this compacts the flour.
  2. Ensure water is at the correct temperature (110°F): Yeast is a living organism, and its activity is temperature-sensitive. Water that is too cold won’t activate the yeast, leading to little to no rise. Water that is too hot will kill the yeast, rendering it ineffective. Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure your water is precisely between 105°F and 115°F (ideally around 110°F) for optimal yeast activation.
  3. Knead the dough properly: Kneading develops the gluten in the dough, which is essential for creating the bread’s structure, elasticity, and chewiness. You can knead by hand on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes, or use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment on low speed for 5-7 minutes. The dough should become smooth, elastic, and pass the “windowpane test” (stretching a small piece thin enough to see light through it without tearing).
  4. Allow the dough to rise until doubled: This first rise, or bulk fermentation, allows the yeast to work its magic, producing gas that expands the dough. Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl, turn it once to coat, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot. This typically takes 1 to 1-1/2 hours, but can vary depending on your kitchen’s temperature.
  5. Choose a warm place for rising: Yeast thrives in warm, draft-free environments. An ideal rising temperature is between 75°F-80°F. If your kitchen is cool, you can create a warm spot by turning your oven on for a minute, then turning it off and letting the dough rise inside with the door slightly ajar.
  6. Divide dough into even portions: For consistently sized and baked rolls, use a kitchen scale to divide your dough into 12 equal portions. This ensures each roll cooks uniformly and has the same delightful texture.
  7. Bake rolls in a cast iron skillet for superior texture: Cast iron skillets retain and distribute heat exceptionally well, resulting in beautifully golden-brown crusts and a wonderfully even bake. A 9-inch cast iron skillet is perfect for this recipe. If you don’t have one, a 9-inch round cake pan will also work, though the crust might be slightly different.
  8. Stuff cheddar cheese between the rolls: This is the secret to those incredible gooey, cheesy pull-apart sections! Once your shaped rolls are arranged in the skillet, gently stuff shredded cheddar cheese into the gaps between them. Sprinkle any remaining cheese generously over the tops for an extra burst of flavor and a beautiful melted cheese crust.
  9. Brush rolls with an egg wash: Before the second rise, lightly brush your rolls with an egg white and water wash. This simple step contributes to a rich, golden-brown color and a slightly shiny, appealing crust.
  10. Allow a second rise until doubled: After shaping and arranging, the rolls need a second proofing. This final rise ensures a light, airy texture. Depending on your kitchen’s temperature, this might take 30-45 minutes, or up to an hour. Don’t rush this step!
  11. Bake at 350°F (175°C) to perfection: Bake your rolls until they are a deep golden brown and register an internal temperature of 190°F (88°C) on a kitchen thermometer. Using a thermometer is highly recommended to ensure they are fully cooked without being overbaked and dry.
  12. Brush with garlic butter immediately after baking: The moment the rolls come out of the oven, brush them generously with the warm, fragrant garlic butter. The hot rolls will absorb the butter, infusing them with an extra punch of garlicky goodness and keeping them incredibly moist.

Optimal Storage and Reheating for Freshness

While these rolls are undoubtedly best enjoyed fresh from the oven, you can easily store them to savor later. Properly stored, they remain delicious and tender.

These dinner rolls may be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. To best preserve their texture and flavor, we highly recommend reheating them before serving. This revives the soft crumb and, more importantly, brings that cheddar cheese back to its warm, gooey glory.

For longer storage, you can also freeze these dinner rolls for up to 1 month. Ensure the rolls are completely cooled after baking before wrapping them tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. Place them in a freezer-safe bag or container.

When you’re ready to enjoy them from frozen, thaw the rolls completely at room temperature. Once thawed, wrap them in tin foil and reheat in a 400°F (200°C) oven for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through and the cheese is melted and bubbly again.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (110F)
  • 1 package (1/4 oz) or 2-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 to 4-1/2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 large egg white, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 medium cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Place warm water in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook OR a large bowl. Dissolve yeast in water and let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix honey, egg, and oil into yeast mixture until smooth. Add salt, garlic powder, and 4 cups all purpose flour to bowl and mix on low speed OR with a wooden spoon if making dough by hand until dough pulls away from sides of bowl, about 2 minutes of mixing. (If dough seems a bit wet, add additional flour by the tablespoon until dough pulls away from sides of bowl.)
  3. If making dough in stand mixer, knead dough in mixer on low speed 5-7 minutes until dough is stretchy and elastic. If making dough by hand, turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead by hand until dough is stretchy and elastic, about 10 minutes of kneading.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place at room temperature 1 to 1-1/2 hours until dough is doubled in size.
  5. Once dough has doubled in size, preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease a 9-inch cast iron skillet. Set aside.
  6. Punch risen dough down and divide into 12 even portions. Roll each dough portion out into a smooth ball and arrange in greased skillet.
  7. Stuff shredded cheddar between dinner rolls and sprinkle any remaining on top. Brush dinner rolls with egg white/water wash. Allow dinner rolls to rise in a warm place 30-45 minutes until doubled in size.
  8. Bake dinner rolls at 350F 25-30 minutes until rolls are a deep golden brown and register 190F on a kitchen thermometer.
  9. In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add garlic and saute 1 minute until fragrant.
  10. Brush garlic butter mixture over warm dinner rolls. Allow dinner rolls to cool several minutes before breaking apart and serving warm. Enjoy!
